Welcome to the fifth edition of the Columbia East Asia Review! CEAR is the first all-undergraduate, peer-reviewed journal in the United States dedicated to publishing outstanding undergraduate research and promoting interdisciplinary dialogue on topics in East and Southeast Asian studies. Columbia undergraduates founded CEAR in 2008 with the goal of cultivating a dynamic and engaged undergraduate East Asian Studies community. Five years later, CEAR continues to grow and fulfill its mission to produce a highly relevant international publication showcasing excellent scholarship. Our submissions pool expanded significantly this year, with outstanding submissions by students from three continents and over forty universities. The diversity of institutions and backgrounds as well as the wide variety of disciplines and regions our submissions represent serve as evidence that undergraduate interest and excellence in East Asian studies is stronger than ever.
